Ukulele Lessons
101
The ukulele
is a wonderful instrument. Since it is Hawaiian, it’s mostly
associated with the beach and its pleasures. This makes it
ideal for playing relaxed, happy tunes; who can help picturing
a beautiful tiki dancer while listening to a transporting
Hawaiian ukulele tune? But the instrument is not limited to
beach music, of course.
Country and
folk musicians have adopted it to express all sorts of
feelings, and the options for a ukulele player nowadays are
uncountable. So, if you are willing to say something through
the music coming out of your ukulele, just keep on reading and
find out some more about this beautiful
instrument.
In order to
understand how to play any kind of music instrument, it’s
always good to know how each part of it is called and what it’s
used for. The easiest part to recognize on your ukulele is the
body. The body is where sounds resonate, and the part you will
place under you right arm when playing. Attached to it is a
thing long wooden piece called the neck. The neck is covered
with parallel lines.
These lines
that run along the neck are the fret lines, and the spaces
between them are the actual frets. Depending on which fret you
place your fingers on, the notes will vary. But the main tuning
of the instrument is not determined by the frets, it’s set
through the tuning pegs, which are on the head of the ukulele,
which is attached to the neck. By turning the tuning pegs, you
will be able to make the strings tighter or looser in order to
get to the needed sound.
You may be
wondering what the “needed sound” I’m talking about is. Well,
the “needed sound” is the right tuning, and it may change
depending on what type of ukulele you have, but most of them
are tuned in notes g, c, e and a. Make sure the tuning is
correct before you start playing, this way you will not only
training your hands, but also your ears.
Now that
you know the parts on your ukulele, and you’ve already tuned
it, it’s time to start playing. You can find chords and tabs to
do so all around the net. Find chords or tabs to your favorite
ukulele songs (it takes a lot of playing to get instruments to
sound really well, so it’s good to make sure you will enjoy as
much as you can when you practice), and start doing what
musicians are all about: play, play and play some more. You
will sound better every day.
It’s good to
play a part slowly for some time in order to get your fingers
and your head to understand what you’re doing with the ukulele.
After that’s covered, you can start picking up the pace. This
will give you a better base to build on before registering
